Workshops & Clinics

Workshops

Workshops are designed to give students the time to make a change with their horse without the added pressure of a large class.

Workshops cover all the basic ground and riding skills from the Silversand program.

You will learn how to feel for true softness in your horse and how you can develop that softness into a partnership of trust, confidence and fun.

Different basics covered would include learning how to control your horse from the ground by moving and controlling the forequaters and hindquarters. Learn how to move your horse in a circle and backwards. Understanding why developing the partnership from the ground has such a large impact on your riding.

Riding skills include gaining control of your horse’s hindquarters. Understanding where your horse’s engine is and how to control it. Developing an independent seat and discovering how soft you and your horse can truly be.

Workshops are three hour group lessons designed around the individual requirements of the students.

The groups are run with a maximum of 6 students per group.

Workshops can be run for just groundwork, riding or a combination of both.David Mellor Horsemanship

Trail Riding

Trail Riding classes are aimed at students who can confidently ride their horse in a yard or small paddock but want to achieve greater harmony and control on the trail.

We treat trail riding as an “extreme sport.” By this we mean that once you leave your property you loose control over many factors which may influence your horse. You have no control over coming into contact with cars, trucks, motorbikes, cyclists, animals or the weather. At home you can control to a large degree these added stimulus, but once you go through your gate you can’t. So treat the trail as if your life depends on it. In a lot of cases it does. Many people are hurt every week riding their horses on the trail with horses that just are not ready. If  you don’t have very good control over your horses mind and feet at home, why would it be any better away from his home?

This is where our trail classes come into their own. It isn’t about the “trail ride.” Its about preparing your horse. Its about treating the trail the same way you treat everything else. Our trail classes are not about going for long rides, in fact we may only get across the road. Its about getting your horse out but keeping their mind with you. Making sure you have control of their feet every step of the way. The moment you loose this that is when problems start.

Trail classes are run over 2 hrs and are currently only being offered as a private lesson.

Clinics

Clinics are run approximately every 3 – 4 months. They can be tailored to individual groups requirements. As a general rule clinics are run over 2 or 3 days and cover all areas of the Silversand Foundation program.
